Julie M. Janeway, BBA, MSA, JD, ABD/Ph.D
Julie Janeway is an attorney and a gastric bypass patient having had surgery in October, 2003. She is a previously published author of numerous articles on legal and non-legal topics, and is frequently featured in various peer-reviewed publications writing about a variety of bariatric related topics. She is the co-author of the number one weight loss surgery patient education book in the world, "The REAL Skinny on Weight Loss Surgery: An Indispensable Guide to What You Can REALLY Expect!" now in its second edition, and "Little Victories REAL Food Cookbook! Easy, practical, healthy foods your whole family will eat." She is also a contributing author of two medical texts books, is a major contributing author of The Encyclopedia of Obesity, and the co-author of two upcoming textbooks for dietary science students and practicing dietitians. Julie is currently a professor of law, political science, public health, and social science at Central Michigan University, as well as a nationally and internationally requested educator and trainer on bariatric, obesity, legal, education, leadership, management, communication, and support group leadership topics. She teaches bariatric related continuing education courses for ASMBS, BariMD, ADA, ADMA, CON, and other organizations. She is a professional public health and bariatric educator.Julie Janeway has taught traditional and non-traditional college students for fourteen years, specializing in numerous areas of health, law, political science, public policy, social science, business, and ethics. She emphasizes real world application of theory through experiential learning, practical usage, and community involvement. Through Little Victories Medical/Legal Consulting & Training™ and other divisions of Little Victories™ she now specializes in teaching medical professional continuing education, support group leader training, and practice management, advocacy, administration and risk management training, while bringing these practical education and service learning strategies into the mix. Her teaching style is dynamic and "out of the box," and she brings those same charismatic qualities to her seminars and lectures across the country. Julie is an outgoing and vibrant individual, and she views the world as a classroom in which she both teaches and learns.
Julie holds a Bachelor degree in Business Administration with minors in marketing, international relations, communication, and social science, a Master of the Science of Administration, a Juris Doctorate, and is ABD on her Ph.D. in Public Policy / Public Administration, with her dissertation focusing on bariatric regulatory issues.
She is a former Michigan trial attorney with significant experience in employment law, medical malpractice defense, licensing and regulatory law, contract and business law, real estate law, governmental relations, civil rights, and issue advocacy. Prior to becoming an attorney, Julie worked extensively in the areas of marketing, promotion, and public relations, and is a former on-air television legal correspondent for a Michigan ABC affiliate having covered the Oklahoma Bombing and McVeigh cases, the University of Michigan Admissions Diversity case, and other notable trials and legal issues.
Julie brings a wide variety of experience and training to her service as a Member of the National Board of Directors of the Obesity Action Coalition. Her emphasis is on education, access to care, and legal and insurance reform with regard to recognition of obesity as the basis for discrimination, as a disease and potentially disabling condition, and as a medical condition capable of management and eradication through prevention and viable and medically sound treatment options. As a trained advocate Julie brings her trial and negotiation skills directly to the decision makers in order to advocate for and represent the interests of the unheard majority of Americans who suffer from varying degrees of obesity. She remains active in several local and national law and education organizations.
Currently, she is the co-owner of Little Victories Press™ working in the capacities of Executive Editor and Chief Legal Counsel, and she co-owns Little Victories Support University™, and Little Victories Medical/Legal Consulting & Training™ serving both bariatric patients and medical professionals across the country and around the world in creating and providing the latest in bariatric program and support services. She is also the co-owner of Athena Group Consulting serving education, business/medical, government, human service, and community arenas with professional development, program development, assessment, and other consulting services. She continues to pursue numerous areas of research and publication to advance the bariatric field and elevate bariatric care, and speaks around the world on a variety of topics related to her research and publications.
